REFLECTION

Experience

Can't believe my time with Typography has come to an end. My experience with Mr Vinod as well as the class was one of the greatest academic experience I've had. From creating type expression, to creating telegram stickers, I never would've thought these would be possible if anyone were to tell me this 5 years ago. I've learned a lot in the class, and the skills that I've gained would surely help me in my future works. As I'm an advertising student, I felt like the knowledge from Typography was actually really important in my industry in the future. My understandings from this module made me aware of the importance of type formatting, as well as the type design task. I was struggling compared to my other classmates for the type design task, and I must say I was the toughest for me. Even with that being said, I've learned so much from this module and it truly was a fantastic experience.

Observations

Observing the little but crucial details of typography opened my mind about the whole concept of many typography aspects. One memorable observation throughout the semester was the readings and ideas of lettering from other typography practitioners. It blew my mind on how great those people can create amazing letterings, even applying theories and knowledge to perfect the execution. Researching on different type expression for assignment Task 1: Exercise 1 was also a great observation. In fact, the exercise of type expression was my favourite task to complete as I had fun observing the different meanings and expressions letters can have. Overall, the observation of researching and inspiration from other practitioners helped me in learning.

Findings

A general finding that I've had with Typography was the attention to details. Before any Typography lessons, I always have the impression or assumption of type design being easy. Well, I've learned that the hard way. I struggled so much for the Type Design exercise, however, the feedback from Mr Vinod and the theories that I've applied made me complete the task in a better fashion. All the optical illusions of Typography taught me about how the understanding of overshoot is important. Furthermore, in Type Formatting, I've also found out the importance of 'orphans' and 'widows'. Never in my life I would've taught these concepts and theories existed, but Typography helped me in finding these useful skills and understandings. It truly was one unique experience where I enjoy making mistakes and learning the Typography module.
