REFLECTION

Experience

I would say my overall experience was similar to Typography in the previous semester, but of course, Advanced Typography requires more work. Starting from Week 1, I can already feel the pressure as we have to finish the typographic systems by Week 2. The rest of the assignments' deadline were very near to each other too, making time management an important factor this semester. I had to go back to my notes in Typography to freshen up my mind for various tasks, and it was definitely helpful and further refining my skills in Typography. Practically, I was fine with Adobe work. However, I did struggle to arrange my time efficiently given the amount of work from other modules as well. The tasks provided this semester was an eye-opener, as it requires more research and real world applications. I truly believe with the experience I have now, many of the things I've learnt would be crucial factors in many real life scenarios.

Observations

The 'Type and Play' and 'Type Exploration' tasks were the ones where it required me to observe more. For 'Type and Play', I had to explore the things around me and observe potential letterforms in them. Like the coconut picture that I took, it took me quite some time to really observe and pick out letterforms within the nature of the fruit. However, sometimes I should look at the bigger picture. Given the feedback by Mr. Vinod, he advised me to just simplify my idea and just pick out the potential letters from the fruit's shape. Furthermore, the 'Type Exploration' task also made me observe more on existing typefaces. As my typeface would have a 'spooky' vibe, I had to observe carefully on the nature of the shapes, as well as getting influence/ inspiration from existing typefaces. These observations were made to help me gradually in my tasks, as I now realise it is near impossible to start everything from zero.

Findings

Through 14 weeks, I've found out that everything we do, it's limitless. Compared to the previous semester, we have more freedom on what we want to do, and how we want to do it. It requires self-discipline and patience in order to achieve what we want to achieve. Taking the 'Type Exploration' task as an example, the findings through research and application was a call for trial and error. In some cases I had to experiment the slight difference of patterns when designing my typeface, making necessary adjustments. I've also found out the importance of consistency. It is something that requires a lot of time to achieve, but being aware on the importance of it will help guide the end product better. The shapes, strokes, and nature of each alphabet, numbers, punctuations, and symbols would somehow have something in common. Finding the small hiccups in type design and zooming in and out of my Adobe Illustrator was a pain, but nonetheless it was well worth it.
